A Universal Orlando split stay means booking two hotels on one trip. Stay one or two nights at an Epic Universe hotel for your Epic day, then move to Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, or Portofino Bay for Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Only those three hotels include free Express Unlimited, and it doesn’t work at Epic Universe. Splitting means you aren’t paying premium rates on days the perk can’t help you.

Why split your Universal Orlando stay at all?
Universal Orlando is now really two resorts. The original parks (Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure), CityWalk, and the older hotels sit on one campus. Epic Universe and its three hotels sit on a separate campus a short drive south. No single hotel gives you the best of both.
- Free Express Unlimited comes only with Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay, and Loews Royal Pacific. It’s valid all day, including arrival and departure days, at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure only, per Loews Hotels’ Universal benefits page.
- Express is never free at Epic Universe. Epic Universe Express is a separate single-use pass with no Unlimited version. One-day prices started at $199.99 per person and topped $300 on peak dates as of June 2026, according to Deep Arrival’s 2026 pricing breakdown.
- Helios Grand Hotel, the luxury hotel inside Epic Universe, does not include Express at any park. Its real perk is location: a private entrance into Celestial Park.
- Early Park Admission covers Epic Universe for every on-site hotel guest. Universal added this on May 23, 2025. That early hour is the closest thing to free Express at Epic.
Put that together and a single-hotel trip always leaves value on the table. At an Express hotel, you pay a premium nightly rate on your Epic day and get no line-skipping. At an Epic hotel, you pay for Express (or wait in standby lines) at the two original parks. A split stay fixes both problems.

Three split-stay plans that work for families

1. The classic: Epic hotel first, Express hotel second
Example 5-night trip: 2 nights at Stella Nova or Terra Luna, then 3 nights at Royal Pacific or Hard Rock.
- Arrival day: check in near Epic Universe and rest at the pool.
- Day 2: Epic Universe with Early Park Admission. Head straight to your top priority before standby lines build.
- Day 3: move to your Express hotel. Express Unlimited starts on check-in day, so you can drop bags and ride Islands of Adventure that afternoon.
- Days 4–5: Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure with unlimited Express rides.
This order works well because Epic Universe is usually the day you want to be fresh for, and moving hotels mid-trip lands on a day when Express still works.
2. The splurge: Helios Grand + Hard Rock

Want to walk to every park? Stay at Helios Grand for your Epic day. You can ride at Early Park Admission, walk back for a midday break, and return for the nighttime show. Then switch to Hard Rock, which sits next to Universal Studios Florida and is a 10-minute walk to Islands of Adventure, as TouringPlans notes in its split-stay guide. Helios ranged from roughly $293 on value weeknights to $500+ on peak weekends as of mid-2026 (Deep Arrival), so one Helios night is often enough.
3. The budget split: value hotel + one Express night
If your family only needs Express for one heavy park day, stay at Cabana Bay or Aventura for most of the trip. Book a single night at Royal Pacific for your busiest Universal Studios Florida + Islands of Adventure day. Because Express is valid on both arrival and departure days, one paid night can unlock up to two days of Express. That’s often the biggest money-saver we find for families.
Does a split stay actually save money?
Here’s the quick math for a family of four. Express Unlimited bought separately can cost roughly $120 to $400 per person per day depending on the date (Deep Arrival, June 2026). For four people, that’s about $480–$1,600 of value per park day at the original parks, but $0 of value on an Epic Universe day.
So the question for each night of your trip is simple: Will we be at Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure tomorrow? If yes, an Express hotel usually pays for itself. If no, a lower-priced hotel (or one right next to Epic Universe) is the better buy. We run this comparison for every Universal quote, because room rates move a lot from night to night.
When a split stay is NOT worth it
- Trips of 3 nights or fewer. Packing up eats into a short trip. Pick one hotel based on your must-do park.
- Families skipping Epic Universe. Just stay at an Express hotel for the whole trip.
- Low-crowd dates. On quiet weekdays, Early Park Admission plus smart rope-drop timing may make Express unnecessary. Our rope drop strategy guide explains how.
- Toddlers and nap schedules. If a hotel change would wreck naptime, one well-located hotel beats saving a few hundred dollars.
How to switch hotels without losing a park day

- Check out after breakfast and ask the bell desk to hold your bags or help with the move. Ask your Pixie agent to request an early check-in at hotel #2.
- The fastest transfer is a short rideshare between campuses. Universal’s buses connect through the CityWalk hub, and the Signature hotels run a shuttle between each other (TouringPlans).
- Your theme park tickets go with you, so only the hotel perks change. Express starts at check-in at your second hotel.
- Keep one park-ready bag (sunscreen, chargers, ponchos) so the transfer doesn’t slow you down.
Split stays during the 2026 holiday season
Universal’s holiday season runs November 14, 2026 – January 3, 2027, with first-ever holiday decor in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and Isle of Berk at Epic Universe (Universal Orlando). Holiday weeks are when Express is worth the most, which makes the split-stay math even stronger. Note that Volcano Bay closes October 26 for maintenance, so you can skip that ticket add-on this winter (our closure guide). Universal Orlando split stay FAQ
Can you split your stay between two Universal Orlando hotels?
Yes. You book two separate reservations (or one vacation package with two hotel segments) and move between them mid-trip. Your theme park tickets stay the same.
Does Helios Grand Hotel include Universal Express?
No. Helios Grand doesn’t include Express at any park. Only Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay, and Loews Royal Pacific include free Express Unlimited, and only at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
Does free hotel Express work at Epic Universe?
No. Epic Universe Express is sold separately, and there’s no Unlimited version.
Do all Universal hotel guests get Early Park Admission to Epic Universe?
Yes. Guests at Universal Orlando’s on-site hotels get Early Park Admission, which has included Epic Universe since May 23, 2025, with valid park admission.
Which order is best for a split stay?
For most families, Epic Universe hotel first, then the Express hotel. You switch on a day when Express already works at your new hotel.
Is a split stay worth it for a 4-night trip?
Often, yes, if Epic Universe is one of your park days. A 1-night Epic stay plus a 3-night Express stay is a common Pixie recommendation.
